With both chambers back in session and a government shutdown successfully averted, attention now turns back to budget reconciliation. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), and House and Senate Republican committee chairs will convene March 25, to align their differing versions of the reconciliation package.
Congressional Republicans initially aim to finalize a joint budget resolution in early April, with floor votes in both chambers on the new resolution, and then with various committee markups expected in late April and early May. If all goes according to plan, President Trump would be able to sign the tax and spending cuts into law by Memorial Day. Given Speaker Johnson’s narrow majority in the House and the differences between the Senate and House approaches to the level of cuts needed, this timeline is relatively ambitious. Some predict July is a more realistic month to expect movement in Congress on reconciliation ahead of the August recess.
