New tools from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) aim to help health care organizations assess their current state of safety and identify opportunities for improvement.
As part of Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safet, IHI has released a Self-Assessment Tool 2024 Update and companion user guide.
Additionally, the National Action Alliance for Patient and Workforce Safety and the Department of Health and Human Services have launched the National Healthcare Safety Dashboard, an online resource that aggregates hospital safety data from four primary measurement sources into one comprehensive tool.
This resource allows hospitals to recommit to safety through baseline self-assessments and access to federally sponsored safety tools. It was created with the goal of reducing patient and workforce harm by 50 percent by 2026, as set by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality National Advisory Council.
The National Action Alliance will also host several webinars in the coming months focused on safety culture:
- Safety Culture: Psychological Safety (Session 1), Feb. 18, noon–1 pm ET
- Safety Culture: Teamwork and Patient Safety Norms (Session 2), March 18, noon–1 pm ET
- Safety Culture: Measuring and Responding (Session 3), April 15, noon–1 pm ET
