A new report published by Essential Hospitals Institute details how six essential hospitals created and enhanced office-based addiction treatment programs for opioid use disorder (OUD) through a grant-funded learning collaborative.

Transforming Care: Insights from Essential Hospitals Institute’s Office-Based Addiction Treatment Initiative highlights societal and environmental barriers to care for OUD, especially among historically marginalized people. The report also suggests ways hospitals can improve access to and engagement with office-based addiction treatment.

From October 2022 to October 2023, collaborative members attended discussions on best practices for screenings, interdisciplinary care team roles, strategies for monitoring and support, considerations for specialty populations, and harm reduction. The report features programs from:

  • Baystate Health
  • Ben Taub Hospital
  • Broward Health
  • Harris Health Ambulatory Services
  • Lifespan Rhode Island Hospital
  • St. Joseph’s Medical Center

The collaborative detailed in the report is the first of three the Institute will convene under this project.
