President Joe Biden (D) on Oct. 30 signed an executive order establishing the first set of standards on artificial intelligence (AI) use across industries.
The order acknowledges that responsible AI has the potential to solve challenges and increase productivity, innovation, and security. It also notes that AI misuse has the potential to contribute to fraud, discrimination, bias, disinformation, and national security concerns, as well as pose risks to workers.
Among other requirements, the order:
- Instructs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish an AI Task Force within 90 days. The task force is required to develop policies and frameworks within a year.
- Calls on several agencies, including HHS, to establish frameworks to track clinical errors resulting from AI used in health care settings.
- Invokes the Defense Production Act, requiring companies to provide the federal government with information on developed models for cybersecurity purposes.
- Instructs the Commerce Department to develop guidance for watermarking AI-created content and expand grants for research of AI use in health care.
