On the Hill: House Hearing Explores AI in Health Care

December 4, 2023
Julia Cecil

A key House health panel last week heard testimony on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care, focusing on the potential benefits to care delivery and innovation but also considering how the technology could affect access to care and patient privacy.

The Nov. 29 hearing by the Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, “Understanding How AI Is Changing Health Care,” featured testimony by hospital and health care technology experts, including Christopher Longhurst, MD, chief medical officer and chief digital officer for America’s Essential Hospitals member UC San Diego Health. They discussed how AI could help drive medical innovations, support health care professionals’ training, and reduce administrative burdens. The hearing also explored the accuracy of AI for diagnoses and treatment and its implications for equity and patient privacy.

The association monitored the hearing and will continue to engage lawmakers and hospital members on best practices for the technology’s use.

Committee Activity This Week

Both the House and the Senate are in session Monday through Thursday this week, with only the Senate convening on Friday.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a full committee markup of 44 pieces of legislation Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 2 pm ET, including proposals related to the physician fee schedule, pharmacy benefit managers, and telehealth.
