On the Hill: Association Urges Congressional Action on Baxter IV Fluid Shortage

October 16, 2024
Julia Grady

America’s Essential Hospitals continues to advocate for federal support to alleviate IV fluid supply shortages following Hurricane Helene’s impact on operations at Baxter International Inc.’s plant in North Carolina.

In an Oct. 11 letter to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the association urged Congress to act immediately to increase IV fluid supplies and instruct the appropriate federal agencies to enact policies to ease the burden of the shortage, with a focus on hospitals serving vulnerable populations. This came after the association sent an Oct. 10 letter urging the administration to take action and the Food and Drug Administration issued guidance on compounding parenteral drug products.

America’s Essential Hospitals also supports Rep. Lori Trahan (D-Mass.)’s congressional dear colleague letter, an official request from Congress to federal agencies to act to protect essential hospitals and others serving the safety net. The association urged members to ask their members of Congress to sign the letter.
