On the Hill: Association to Respond to GME White Paper

June 25, 2024
Julia Grady

America’s Essential Hospitals this week will state its support for actions to ease health care workforce shortages through graduate medical education (GME) policies, as outlined in a recent Senate committee white paper.

The association will submit its response to a white paper released in early May by Senate Committee on Finance Chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and a bipartisan group of seven other committee members. The policy draft describes improvements to the Medicare GME program to address ongoing health care workforce shortages. America’s Essential Hospitals will encourage and commend the committee’s attempts to mitigate a dearth of primary care and psychiatry providers, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Committee Activity This Week

The House will convene for session Tuesday through Friday this week. The Senate is in a state work period through July 5.

The House Committee on Ways and Means will hold a hearing June 26, at 10 am ET, titled, “Strengthening Child Welfare and Protecting America’s Children.” Also, its Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing at 3 pm ET that day, titled, “Improving Value-Based Care for Patients and Providers.”
