Oklahoma Becomes 30th State to Extend Medicaid Postpartum Coverage

March 31, 2023
Faridat Animashaun

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on March 23 announced that 30 states and Washington, D.C., have now extended Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage from 60 days to 12 months after birth.

Oklahoma is the 30th state CMS approved for expansion, extending coverage through the state plan authority established by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in 2021. Prior to the state plan amendment option ARPA provided, states previously expanded coverage through Section 1115 waivers.

CMS is continuing work with states who have proposed expansion. Notably, Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon (R) and Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) both signed bills in March to extend Medicaid postpartum coverage to 12 months.
