New NIH Division Targets Women’s Health

October 23, 2026
Isabel Perlin

President Trump on Oct. 19 signed an executive order (EO) establishing a new division under the National Institutes of Health (NIH) called the NIH Women’s Health Division.

This EO aims to use artificial intelligence to improve understanding of women’s health, accelerate approvals of promising women’s health products, ensure treatments are affordable for all women, and direct funding toward conditions that uniquely or disproportionately affect women.

The new division will prioritize research on cardiovascular disease, cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, chronic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, polyendocrine metabolic ovary syndrome, infertility, maternal health, menopause, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, and other conditions affecting women throughout their lives. The new division will not replace the preexisting Office of Research on Women’s Health.
