The Joint Commission will launch a new Sustainable Healthcare Certification for hospitals on Jan. 1, 2024.
To earn the voluntary certification, hospitals must:
- Be in the United States, be operated by the U.S. government, or operate under a charter of the U.S. Congress.
- Be a hospital or critical access hospital compliant with applicable federal laws.
- Provide baseline emissions data for three greenhouse gas (GHG) emission sources and an action plan to reduce emissions.
To recertify, the organization must provide 24 months of data and demonstrate a reduction of three GHG emission sources.
