Interventions to Decrease Food Insecurity

Participants joined America’s Essential Hospitals and the Social Interventions Research and Evaluation Network (SIREN) to learn how health systems nationwide are exploring ways to help meet patients’ food insecurity needs. Emilia De Marchis, MD, from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Family and Community Medicine, presented the results of a systematic review of health care–based food insecurity interventions. This research was sponsored by SIREN at UCSF.

Attendees also heard firsthand an essential hospital’s experience delivering a food insecurity intervention. Larry Altier shared how Lee Health, in Fort Myers, Fla., developed and evaluated Flavor Harvest @ Home, a program designed to help meet the nutrition needs of patients living in food deserts.
