HHS Releases AI Strategic Plan

January 16, 2025
Faridat Animashaun

In a Jan. 10 strategic plan, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provides a roadmap for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into health care, public health, and human services, and outlines the department’s approach to leveraging AI while emphasizing safety, equity, and access.

The plan builds on existing agency efforts to target policy, workforce development, and stakeholder engagement related to AI, HHS says. Additionally, it identifies four key goals for advancing AI use within HHS:

  1. Catalyze health AI innovation and adoption to unlock new ways to use AI to improve people’s lives.
  1. Promote trustworthy AI development and ethical and responsible use to avoid potential harm.
  1. Democratize AI technologies and resources to promote equitable access for all.
  1. Cultivate AI-empowered workforces and organizational cultures to allow staff to make the best use of AI.

HHS has not specified timelines for implementing the plan but stated its intent to refine its strategies regularly as new developments arise.
