The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sent every state Medicaid agency a letter reviewing preliminary Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) unwinding data. The letters review the state’s May 2023 metrics and compliance with federal requirements in three categories:
- Call center operations.
- Disenrollments at renewal due to procedural or administrative reasons.
- Modified adjusted gross income application processing times.
If CMS expresses concern about these metrics, the agency requests the state act to remedy the issue identified in the letter. CMS also reminds the state that the agency can take compliance action, including withholding a state’s enhanced federal funding or issuing a corrective action plan. CMS also offers technical assistance and shares previous resources to aid states in Medicaid unwinding.
