A new snapshot from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provides a national and state-level picture of the Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) eligibility and enrollment life cycle, across data sets, in a single, monthly report.
The Medicaid and CHIP Eligibility Operations and Enrollment Snapshot includes data on:
- Medicaid and CHIP enrollment
- Total applications submitted to Medicaid, CHIP, human services agencies, and state-based marketplaces
- Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) application processing times
- Renewal outcomes
- Call center data
Key findings from this snapshot on August 2024 eligibility and enrollment include:
- 79.4 million people were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP.
- CMS received 2.6 million applications for Medicaid and CHIP, an increase of 19 percent since July 2024, 22 percent since August 2023, and 62 percent since August 2022.
- CMS processed 66 percent of MAGI applications in seven days or fewer and 7 percent of MAGI applications in more than 45 days, which is the regulatory standard for determining eligibility on a basis other than disability, including MAGI-based determinations.
- 73 percent of individuals due for renewal renewed their coverage. Of the 17 percent who were disenrolled, 11 percent were disenrolled due to procedural reasons.
