The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center released a one-year progress report on the implementation of its strategy for the next decade to advance health system transformation, originally announced in fall 2021.
The report summarizes the Innovation Center’s progress in addressing the strategy’s five objectives:
- Drive accountable care.
- Advance health equity.
- Support innovation.
- Address affordability.
- Partner to achieve system transformation.
Additionally, the Innovation Center outlined in a blog post four key areas to improve access to high-quality integrated specialty care, including:
- Enhanced data sharing and transparency in clinician performance.
- Continued deployment of episode payment models that align with accountable care organizations and primary care, including mandatory models.
- Support for specialists to further embed in primary care–focused models.
- Creation of incentives within population-based models to encourage specialty care integration.
For each area, the Innovation Center describes the new specialty strategy and the timeframe for implementation in the short term (two to three years) and long term (three to five years).
