The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on March 28 extended the federal marketplace special enrollment period (SEP) for individuals and families losing Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage through the end of the Medicaid continuous enrollment condition, known as “unwinding.”
Previously, any individual who lost Medicaid or CHIP eligibility between March 31, 2023, and July 31, 2024, was eligible for a SEP to transition to coverage through HealthCare.gov.
However, many states are expected to extend their unwinding timelines for several months, due to the adoption of strategies to promote continuity of coverage for eligible individuals, pauses in procedural disenrollments, or other state-specific situations. Therefore, CMS is extending this SEP to Nov. 30.
