CMS Awards 200 New Medicare-Funded Residency Slots

On Nov. 22, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded 200 graduate medical education (GME) slots to 109 teaching hospitals across 33 states in a third round of slots allocated from 1,000 authorized by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021.

CMS is introducing 200 new slots annually over five years for qualifying hospitals through a process described in the fiscal year (FY) 2022 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) final rule. The rule prioritized hospitals with training programs in geographic areas and demonstrating the greatest need for additional providers, based on Health Professional Shortage Area scores. About three-quarters of the new positions are for primary care and mental health specialties.

The application period for the fourth round of 200 residency positions will open in January 2025 and close on March 31, 2025.
