CMS Acts to Remove Ineligible Medicaid Enrollees

August 25, 2025
Julie Kozminski

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began a new initiative to ensure enrollees in Medicaid and CHIP are U.S. citizens, nationals, or immigrants that are eligible for Medicaid. CMS will start sending monthly enrollment reports to states identifying individuals whose citizenship or immigration status cannot be confirmed through federal databases.

States are expected to review the report and verify the citizenship or immigration status of identified individuals, requesting additional documentation if needed. States then are expected to adjust coverage or enforce noncitizen eligibility rules.
