California will become the first state to expand Medicaid coverage to all low-income adults, regardless of immigration status.
The Medi-Cal expansion, included in a state operating budget Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed June 30, will provide health care coverage for an additional 764,000 people by 2024.
Eighteen states now provide prenatal care to people regardless of their immigration status, and California, Illinois, New York, Oregon, Washington, and the District of Columbia provide health care coverage for low-income children, regardless of immigration status.
