Statement:

Association Urges House Committee on Energy and Commerce to Protect Medicaid

In a Feb. 19 letter to House Committee on Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.), Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.), Subcommittee on Health Chair Buddy Carter (R-Ga.), and Subcommittee on Health Ranking Member Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), America’s Essential Hospitals expressed concern about policies that would cut the Medicaid program. The association urged the committee not to take up proposals that would hurt essential hospitals and their patients as the budget reconciliation process continues.

For context, the House intends to proceed the week of Feb. 24 on a budget resolution that includes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, which must be paired with $1.5 trillion in spending cuts. Due to the size of the package, the association is concerned that the House budget resolution’s instructions to the Energy and Commerce Committee to identify $880 billion in savings would largely come from substantial cuts to Medicaid.
