America’s Essential Hospitals stated its support for actions to ease health care workforce shortages through graduate medical education (GME) policies, as outlined in a May 2024 white paper from Senate Committee on Finance Chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and a bipartisan group of seven other committee members.
The white paper describes improvements to the Medicare GME program to address ongoing health care workforce shortages. America’s Essential Hospitals commended the group’s attempts to mitigate a dearth of primary care and psychiatry providers, particularly in rural and underserved communities, and encouraged them to explore ways essential hospitals can continue to partner with rural communities to help advance shared workforce goals.
