Artificial Intelligence Interest Group

About the Interest group

This interest group will convene essential hospitals currently leveraging AI to collectively explore and advance the responsible use of AI in delivering superior care for all; reducing clinician burden; and closing health outcome gaps.

Through shared learnings and perspectives, practical insights, and peer exchange, the group will focus on developing, deploying, and evaluating responsible and actionable AI best practices and solutions that advance health outcomes, enhance operational efficiency, support financial sustainability, and foster trust.

Meeting Frequency

The interest group will meet virtually every other month; additional meetings may be scheduled as needed.

Strategic Objectives

  • Establish governance protocols.
  • Keep up to date on ethical innovations and policy and regulatory developments.
  • Prepare for implementation.
  • Apply AI to mitigate clinical and non-clinical needs.
  • Monitor and advance health outcomes for all.
  • Foster cross-sector collaboration.

Potential Outputs and Outcomes

  • Map the AI Landscape in hospitals filling a safety net role: Document current AI use, barriers, and facilitators at America’s Essential Hospitals member hospitals.
  • Facilitate peer learning: Convene cross-functional teams regularly to exchange lessons and best practices for co-development.
  • Provide guidance on mission-aligned governance: Develop guidance on mitigating bias, establishing effective governance, and ensuring responsible AI procurement and evaluation.
  • Disseminate actionable insights: Produce reports, toolkits, and presentations to accelerate AI adoption across essential hospitals.

This group meets virtually on the last Thursday of every other month, from 1–2 pm ET, and will cover a range of topics, including:

  • Emerging AI tools and their real-world clinical and operational use cases
  • Governance, compliance, and workforce engagement strategies
  • The role of AI in closing health gaps  and building patient trust
  • Cross-functional collaboration among IT, clinical, and executive leadership

*Note, to accommodate Thanksgiving, the November meeting is rescheduled to Thursday, Dec. 4.
