The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reports 21.4 million people are enrolled in health coverage through federal or state-based marketplaces.
The Health Insurance Marketplaces 2024 Open Enrollment Report, released March 22, is one of several recent federal reports that mark the 10th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act marketplaces.
In 2024:
- 5.1 million more people signed up for coverage compared with 2023, a 31 percent increase.
- 5.2 million people signed up for marketplace coverage for the first time.
- Nationwide, 44 percent of people with marketplace coverage selected a plan for $10 or less per month after the advanced premium tax credit.
Additionally, a new issue brief from the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation Office of Health Policy discusses estimates of enrollment in health insurance coverage obtained through the marketplaces and Medicaid expansion. Notably, 18.6 million people have coverage due to Medicaid expansion. Across coverage groups, 45 million people are enrolled in coverage related to the ACA, an increase of 14.1 million people from 2021 and 32.5 million more people from 2014.
