VIDA!: Tackling Food Insecurity with Healthy Cultural Cooking

Date: Wednesday, October 17, 2018

Time: 2:00 PM ET

Recognizing the health disparities in the Cleveland neighborhoods surrounding The MetroHealth System’s main campus, a coalition of residents, community organizations, and Latina faith leaders convened to envision a “healthy community.” This coalition inspired the VIDA! program, which trains representatives from local Hispanic congregations as Community Health Cooks. In a ‘train-the-trainer’ approach, cooks go on to promote healthy cultural cooking practices within their faith community networks.

Program leaders from MetroHealth shared how VIDA! started and recounted the successes and challenges they faced along the way. Participants learned what methods they employed to tackle food insecurity in a vulnerable population and tailor the program to the community’s cultural needs.
