A Narrative Approach to Teamwork and Culture Change

Date: Wednesday, June 26, 2019

Time: 2:00 PM ET

How do we move from what people do to who they are? How do we invite individuals to share their experiences? How can this mindset create an inclusive, psychologically safe environment that increases trust and sense of belonging in an organization?

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, in West Bloomfield, Mich., uses storytelling to transform the organizational culture, patient care, and, ultimately, the bottom line. Humans are literally wired to share personal stories to reflect, learn, create, heal, and forge bonds. By listening and being heard, we know and are known by each other, which leads to healing. Sharing personal and professional stories also can transform relationships and empower staff to bring out the best in one another, both personally and professionally.

Participants learned how to use visual artmaking, drawing, positive organization, and interprofessional collaboration to engage employees, improve health care quality, and connect with patients.
