As reimbursement transitions from volume to value, hospital revenue is increasingly at risk. Essential hospitals are doubly burdened by their mission to care for a disproportionate share of poor patients and the high cost of the advanced technologies they deploy. While studies suggest an association between lower socioeconomic status and higher readmission rates, it’s not clear how technology demands and a safety-net mission influence other measures of hospital quality, safety, cost, and value. This webinar explored the effect of those factors on publicly reported quality and cost metrics as well as patient experience. Speakers also discussed how these influences could affect the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Five-Star Quality Rating System.
