Diverse populations often face inequitable access to health services and poor patient outcomes. Participants learned how two essential hospitals overcome these challenges to meet the needs of LGBTQ patients and patients with limited English proficiency.
Participants heard how a successful initiative at NYC Health + Hospitals, in New York, promotes positive patient experiences and outcomes for LGBTQ patients through staff training, clinical care programs, and community outreach initiatives. Speakers also shared tips on creating an inclusive work environment for LGBTQ employees.
The Natividad Foundation, in Salinas, Calif., shared its successful Indigenous Interpreting program, which serves patients who speak one of the 68 indigenous languages and 364 linguistic variants originating in Mexico. The program uses trained indigenous interpreters to help doctors and nurses connect with these patients and help patients understand their treatments and follow-up care.
