Value Champions: Overuse and Impact on Equity

WEBINAR DATE: October 28, 2020

This was the first webinar in a three-part series on value champions — change agents who optimize medical care to do less of what potentially harms and more of what truly helps patients. In this first webinar, we explored the concept of value within safety-net settings and examined the relationship between value and health equity.

Association staff described the importance value and equity. The director of the Value Champion program at MacColl Center for Health Care Innovation illustrated how overuse of unnecessary services can increase the risk of harm in vulnerable populations and the domains of harm that often are overlooked and unrecognized. Representatives from two association members — the University of Chicago Medicine and University of California, Los Angeles — shared their thoughts on the intersection of equity and value and how to apply these concepts to the work of essential hospitals.

Upcoming webinars in this miniseries will focus on engaging stakeholders and patients.
