emPOWER Map Helps Hospitals Prepare for Electricity Outages

A new interactive map – emPOWER – can help hospitals and others plan for the emergency needs of patients with electrically powered medical equipment during prolonged electricity outages. The emPOWER Map, released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), shows the residential location of the more than 1.6 million Medicare patients who rely on electricity. The map also incorporates real-time severe weather tracking by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hospitals and emergency personnel can use this information to plan for increased demand for
emergency services based on the number of electricity-dependent Medicare patients in an affected area.
