AHRQ Revamps Mission Under New Director

As the new director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Richard Kronick, PhD, has refocused the agency’s mission to emphasize producing evidence to make health care safer, more accessible, equitable, and affordable.

AHRQ is a major funder and provider of evidence-based resources to essential hospitals. So its new mission may offer insight into what members can expect from the agency across the next year.

Kronick, who became director in September 2013, recently described the four main priorities under the new mission:

  1. Work on the national patient-centered outcomes research initiative created under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  2. Make health care safer.
  3. Evaluate aspects of the ACA, including insurance coverage expansions.
  4. Improve health care affordability, efficiency, and cost transparency.
