Urge Your House Members to Back Supporting Safety Net Hospitals Act

Please urge your House members now to support H.R. 2665, the Supporting Safety Net Hospitals Act, which eliminates two years of looming Medicaid disproportionate share hospital (DSH) cuts for fiscal years (FYs) 2024 and 2025.

Four members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce — Reps. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), and Michael Burgess (R-Texas) — are co-sponsoring the bipartisan bill and plan to circulate a “dear colleague” letter to congressional leadership calling on them to avert the cuts.

When you contact your House members:

  • Share the estimated effect of the Medicaid DSH cut on your hospital.
  • Offer specific examples of how your hospital cares for a disproportionate number of at-risk patients in historically marginalized communities.

Background

Unless Congress acts, an $8 billion cut to Medicaid DSH funding will occur Oct. 1. That $8 billion cut will continue for FYs 2025, 2026, and 2027, amounting to nearly two-thirds of current federal funding. Emphasize to your lawmakers that Medicaid redeterminations, churn, and current economic challenges underscore the need to continue funding DSH fully. Let them know that these cuts will jeopardize access to care and vital services to the community.
