The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a data brief on the national distribution of overall hospital star ratings.
Specifically, CMS analyzed how subsets of hospitals performed in the overall star rating system based on these characteristics:
- bed size
- teaching status
- safety net status
- disproportionate share hospital (DSH) payment eligibility
- critical access hospital (CAH) status
CMS said it intends to post the ratings for individual hospitals “shortly”; the agency did not specify a date.
In a letter to CMS, America’s Essential Hospitals joined other hospital groups in urging CMS to further delay the public release of star ratings due to serious concerns with the rating methodology. The groups also urged CMS to share additional information about the accuracy of its ratings and consider the methodological shortcomings as described in an independent analysis released July 6.
