Providers: No ICD-10 for Services Provided Before Oct. 1

Hospitals and other providers are only required to use diagnosis and procedure codes from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) for claims with a date of service on or after Oct. 1. Claims submitted on Oct. 1 or later but with dates of service prior to Oct. 1 do not need ICD-10 codes but do require ICD-9 codes. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new resource to further explain which codes to choose, including what to do if the dates of service span before and after Oct. 1.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Erin O’Malley, director of policy, at or 202.585.0127.
