CMS has released Hospital Compare preview reports for hospitals participating in inpatient, outpatient, and prospective payment system–exempt cancer hospital quality reporting programs.

These hospitals have until May 5 to preview their overall hospital quality star rating and other quality data that will be added to the Hospital Compare website in July. It is recommended that hospitals download and save a copy of the report for future reference.

Notably, because of an issue with Patient Safety Indicator (PSI) software, inpatient preview reports, hospital-specific reports, and overall quality hospital star ratings will not include PSI results for fiscal year (FY) 2018. As such, star ratings will be updated in July 2017 using FY 2017 PSI results. CMS anticipates that updated PSI results will be available for the October 2017 preview period.

VBP Hospital-Specific Reports

In related news, hospitals have until May 10 to review and correct their hospital value-based purchasing (VBP) hospital-specific reports.

The reports include 30-day risk-standardized mortality measures for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia, as well as the PSI-90 composite measure. While hospitals are not allowed to add new claims or submit corrections to the claims data, they can use the reports to review measure results and discharge data used to calculate claims-based measures and to replicate their results.

Both the Hospital Compare preview reports and VBP hospital-specific reports are accessible through the QualityNet Secure Portal.
