CMS Releases Updated Medicare Cost and Usage Data

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released 2014 Medicare usage and cost data as part of the Obama administration’s effort to increase accountability in the health care system.

This data is released annually and includes provider-level information on inpatient and outpatient services, physician procedures, and Medicare Part D drugs.

This year’s release includes some changes in both the information released and its classification. The data for the inpatient setting includes information on discharges related to all Medicare severity diagnosis-related groups (MS-DRG), while previous releases included only the 100 most common MS-DRGs. In addition, some changes have been made to the ambulatory payment classification groups used for outpatient data.
