On the Hill: Congress Works on Short-Term Funding Fix

Congressional leaders are working on a short-term extension of government funding for many federal agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration and the departments of Homeland Security, Commerce, Justice, and State.

President Trump has agreed to sign an extension to avoid a partial shutdown of the federal government.

Congress will have a limited legislative work week, with events scheduled to observe the passing of former President George H.W. Bush. The body of former President Bush will lie in state at the United States Capitol until the state funeral service on Wednesday.

House Democrats Elect Leaders

The House Democratic Caucus last week held closed-door votes to elect its leadership team for the next session of Congress.

Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was nominated as speaker in a 203-32 vote. Reps. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and James Clyburn (D-SC) were unanimously selected as majority leader and majority whip, respectively.

The full House will convene Jan. 3 to swear in the 116th session of Congress and publicly vote to elect the House Speaker.
