On the Hill: Congress in Recess, Budgets Take the Floor

Congress is on recess and will resume session April 28. Last Thursday, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius testified before the Senate Finance Committee regarding the president’s budget. Later that day, Sebelius announced her resignation.

Also last Thursday, the House narrowly passed Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) budget, which includes more than $5.1 trillion in spending cuts. The budget would also block grant Medicaid, reducing spending on the program by approximately $1 trillion over 10 years. The vote count was 219-205, with all Democrats and 12 Republicans voting “no.” The bill will likely not be considered in the Senate. The Senate Budget Committee will not be producing its own budget this year, however the budget agreement signed into law last December runs for two years.
