On the Hill: Burwell Confirmation, VA Overhaul

This week the House is in recess, but the Senate has returned to session.

Sylvia Mathews Burwell will likely be confirmed by the Senate this week as the new secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Burwell’s nomination passed the Senate Finance Committee on May 21 with significant bipartisan support. Burwell is currently the head of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Last Friday, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned amid allegations that certain VA Hospitals were delaying care to veterans. Attention has now turned to Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-VT) who is working on a legislative package seeking to address health care issues within the VA system such as access to other federally licensed health centers or private care funded by the VA.
