Obama Administration Delays Employer Mandate One Year

The Affordable Care Act requires businesses with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance for their workers or face a penalty of up to $3,000 per employee. The Obama administration has delayed this requirement until January 2015, due to employers’ concerns about their ability to comply with the complexities of the requirement. While more than 90 percent of companies with at least 50 employees already offer health insurance to their workers, those individuals affected by the delay may obtain coverage through the health insurance exchanges, set to begin in 2014. Additional guidance is expected to be released this week.
