New CMS Resources for Hospital Price Transparency Requirements

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released three voluntary price transparency sample list formats to help hospitals comply with Hospital Price Transparency Rule requirements.

The rule, effective Jan. 1, 2021, requires hospitals to publish their negotiated rates for all services in a machine-readable format and display prices of shoppable services in a consumer-friendly format.

Hospital staff can use the new resources to build the required machine readable files in a wide, tall, or plain format. CMS also posted a sample data dictionary defining and explaining data attributes found in the wide and tall sample formats.
