MBN Reporting Requirement to Begin July 1

Acute care facilities that participate in the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program must enter Medicare beneficiary numbers (MBNs) for all Medicare patients into the National Healthcare Safety Network, beginning July 1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  released guidance to assist acute care facilities with submission of MBNs on event records. The MBN does not need to be entered for surgical procedure records. This policy was included in the fiscal year 2014 Inpatient Prospective Payment System final rule.
