Enrollment is now open for consumers seeking Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance coverage for 2016 through the federal healthcare.gov or their state-based insurance marketplace.
Open enrollment for ACA marketplace coverage began Nov. 1 and closes Jan. 31, 2016, with coverage taking effect as soon as Jan. 1. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) previously announced that its main goals for this open enrollment period are to improve the consumer experience, retain current customers, and increase new enrollment. HHS has reported that 11.4 million consumers enrolled in health insurance through federal- or state-based marketplaces in 2015.
Eligible consumers can also apply for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) through the ACA marketplaces. Consumers can apply for these programs at any time during the year.
