Marketplace Enrollment Increases in January

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has reported that as of Feb. 1, nearly 3.3 million people have selected a health insurance plan through either their state marketplace (exchange) or the federally facilitated marketplace. This number represents 45 percent of the 7.3 million people who were eligible to enroll in a marketplace plan from Oct. 1, 2013 to Feb. 1, 2014. During the month of January, more than 1.1 million people selected plans through the marketplaces.

The report also includes information on the types of plans that were selected – 62 percent of people  chose a silver-level plan and almost 20 percent chose a bronze-level plan.

Also noteworthy is the fact that 3.2 million people who submitted applications through the marketplaces were determined to be eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
