Associations, IT Vendor Call for EHR Meaningful Use Program Delay

The American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association requested a one-year delay (until 2015) of stage 2 meaningful use for the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Programs, which provide incentive payments to professionals, eligible hospitals, and critical access hospitals as they adopt, implement, upgrade, or demonstrate meaningful use of EHR technology. In a joint letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the groups stated that small and rural providers may not have enough time to implement changes before 2014. Similarly, at a July 24 Senate Finance Committee hearing on health information technology, Siemens Healthcare CEO John Glass also requested a one-year delay of stage 2.
