The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released Hospital Compare preview reports for hospitals participating in the Inpatient Quality Reporting, Prospective Payment System–Exempt Cancer Hospital Quality Reporting (PCHQR), and Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR) programs.
CMS encourages hospitals to download and save a copy of their report from the QualityNet Secure Portal during the preview period, which runs through Aug. 25. These reports will not be available after the preview period. Data will be published on the Hospital Compare website in October.
This refresh includes two new measures in the IQR program: hospital return days for pneumonia patients and percentage of patients who received appropriate care for severe sepsis and septic shock. The sepsis percentage will include four quarters of rolling data; this release includes data from the first through fourth quarters of 2017.
The agency has postponed the July update of Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings to allow more time to analyze the effect of changes to star rating measures and to address stakeholder concerns. The overall star ratings from December 2017 will remain on Hospital Compare in the meantime.
CMS also announced that the December Hospital Compare quarterly refresh will transition to January. Beginning in 2019, data will be refreshed in January, April, July, and October.
Hospitals can send questions about overall star ratings to the Hospital Compare Overall Rating Team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
