The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released Hospital Compare January preview reports for hospitals in the Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR), Prospective Payment System–Exempt Cancer Hospital Quality Reporting (PCHQR), and Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR) programs.
The preview reports include overall hospital quality star ratings, which were last updated in February 2019, for hospitals (excluding cancer hospitals). CMS plans to change the overall hospital star rating methodology, but the January 2020 update uses existing methodology.
The preview data is available through Dec. 3 on the QualityNet Secure Portal. CMS encourages hospitals to download and save a copy of their report. The agency in January will post the data on Hospital Compare for review by Medicare beneficiaries and the public.
CMS has created quick reference guides for preview data in the IQR, PCHQR, and OQR programs for health care providers. Hospitals can submit questions about the IQR or PCHQR programs through CMS’ inpatient questions and answers tool and ask questions about the OQR program through the outpatient questions and answers tool.

NOTE: CMS identified a data display issue, not a calculation issue, affecting how the overall hospital star rating results displayed in the January 2020 Preview Report for providers. CMS quickly corrected the file and verified the star ratings calculations and data included in the hospital-specific reports to ensure they are correct. If hospitals reviewed their results on Nov. 4 or 5, they should download their results again to view the corrected display of the results.
