HHS Approves Historic Maternal Health Waiver

To mark Black Maternal Health Week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announces the approval of Illinois’ historic Section 1115 waiver that addresses maternal health in the state.

The waiver makes Illinois the first state to provide continuity of full Medicaid benefit coverage for mothers by offering extended eligibility during the entire first year after delivery. This marks a significant change from the current 60-day postpartum period required by federal law.

Several additional states have pending Section 1115 waivers that address maternal health or are pursuing legislation to improve maternal mortality.
