Georgia and Pennsylvania Expand Postpartum Medicaid and CHIP Coverage

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Oct. 27 announced that Georgia and Pennsylvania are the most recent states to extend Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage from 60 days to 12 months after birth.

The two states join California, Kentucky, Oregon, Louisiana, Michigan, South Carolina, and Tennessee in extending coverage through the state plan authority established by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in 2021. In addition to the ARPA state plan option, states also can expand Medicaid coverage through Section 1115 waivers.

Currently, 26 states have now expanded their postpartum coverage to 12 months. CMS is working with other states that have proposed expanding Medicaid postpartum coverage.
