FAQ: COVID-19 FMAP Increase and Essential Hospitals

In a newly released frequently asked questions (FAQ) document, America’s Essential Hospitals explains enhanced Medicaid funding for essential hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (H.R. 6201), signed by President Trump March 19, provides a 6.2 percentage point increase in the Medicaid Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) to states. Subsequently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued an FAQ document on how the agency will implement the FMAP increase.

The new association FAQ document distills CMS’ guidance, highlighting points most important to essential hospitals, including how the increased FMAP applies to Medicaid disproportionate share hospital payments and some waiver payments. The association’s document also details action for hospitals providing the nonfederal share.

Visit the America’s Essential Hospitals coronavirus resource page for more information about the outbreak.
