EHR Meaningful Use Hardship Exceptions Due April 1

Eligible hospitals that want to avoid the 2016 payment adjustment for non-participation in the 2014 Medicare Electronic Health Records (EHR) Incentive Program have until April 1 to file a hardship exception application.

Hospitals that did not meet meaningful use reporting requirements in 2014 could, as a result, face a smaller increase in payment rates under the inpatient prospective payment system in 2016.

The EHR incentive programs website provides hardship exception application instructions and outlines exception eligibility circumstances. In its exception application, a hospital must show proof of limiting circumstances beyond its control, outline how these circumstances precluded meeting meaningful use, and include supporting documentation. Approved exceptions are valid for one year.
